Hello Michael,
My name is Krishna and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. The slot you are reffering to is the PC Card slot. It supports one PC Card, such as a modem or network adapter. The computer ships with a blank installed in the slot to prevent foreign matter from entering the computer interior when a card is not installed. To know more, please visit

Hope this helps.

I have a Dell D630 - on the right side, there is the optical drive and behind that, there are two USB ports.

On the left side, there is a PCMCIA slot with a plastic protective card in it, the wireless switch, the jacks for the microphone & headset/speakers, and a lock.

It might be a Smart Card reader (security measure for some companies) - their ID card with a photo also has circuits built into it that identify the user to the laptop and might encrypt information, too.
