i want to get lg optimus slider and it has android 2.3. will i still be able to run most apps like fun run or angry birds and facebook. or will i need a newer phone becasue the optimus slider is over a year old now

Many apps still run on Android 2.3. In fact, a large number of phones still run on 2.3, and it is currently the predominant OS on Android, even though 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 are already out.
