What kind of licenses do I need to start my Social Media Consulting business? - Jonathan - 04-27-2013 05:09 AM

As a young person in the state of Arizona I need licenses to start even a lemonade stand. What kind of licenses do I need to start a Social Media Consulting business? I am applying for a LLC on top of everything but I need to know what type of business licenses to apply for. Don't tell me to look at my state's website because I tried and there are various kinds of business licenses I can apply for. What kind will I actually need in order to not have any legal trouble?

Typically, once you incorporate, that in itself is deemed a business license. If you want concrete answers, and don't want to go through the states website, then pay an attorney for a consultation.

The other poster is correct. Generally when you start an LLC or incorporate that takes the place of a business license, at least on the state level. You may want to check with your local city or county and see if they require a business license to operate in your area. Really though if you really wanted to you would probably be okay not even getting a business license or incorporating and just filing all your taxes under your social security number as a sole proprieter. Is this a business you are going to stick with or something your trying out and see if it sticks. If just trying it out I would say hold off on all the expense of starting an LLC. Business license is generally pretty cheap, normally around $5 and then you have to run an ad in the legal section of the newspaper announcing your business for two weeks generally that normally runs around $100. My business Social Media Hog is just an LLC.
