Are today's American youth more globally informed and interested in other cultures? - Jodebane - 04-27-2013 09:51 PM

I may be completely wrong, but I personally can't help wonder if the American youth (high school college) are becoming more of world citizens, rather than just isolating themselves in American culture. First of all, today, from what I've read, the percentage of Americans with passports is something like 20% higher than 20 years ago. I've also read that more college students are studying abroad. Plus the there's a lot of kids in my high school who are very interested in other cultures and learning other languages, especially those of Asian countries, particularly Japan. This makes sense when you consider that today, the internet and social media have made it very easy to cross cultural boundaries and learn about another country. Plus people in my school seem to be aware of the negative stereotypes that foreigners make about "Muricans". I could be wrong, but I can't help wondering if today's American youth are more globally informed.
Oh and please explain why you think so if you say yes or no

I'd hope so. Maybe now we can dispel some of those silly stereotypes. And confirm others..... damn rednecks.

maybe a little more, yeah. but there are still tons of people who don't know squat

i graduated high school this may, but in 1 of my classes this guy didn't even know what a country or continent was, the class had to explain it to him.
some people still don't know that not all asians are chinese. some people still don't get that for some reason

so yes and no. some people don't know anything other than eat sleep school and hang out with their friends, literally. some are more informed though

Youth should always be aware about global events. Not only American but all over the world because they are the ones who are going to replace the current lot in all the sectors. Being globally aware always helps them to get a broader and more political perspective on any issue.
