ps3 has no facebook to chat to people at all

That's because the ps3 is a gaming console. Not a smart phone or computer. It can't use apps and only has what's given to it.
However you can use your browser to get on Facebook.
If you want to chat with your psn friends then just create a new chat room.
Also if you go to your Accounts Management page you can link trophy formatting and more to Facebook.
