So when a person puts @ then the name after it receives the message? and what are those things after #? Are those "trending topics" actual pages that people make or what? How do these little phrases trend and when do people put # as opposed to @?
Also why are most tweets so unreadable? like I don't get why ppl put @ to people in the middle of the sentence and then the tweet doesn't even make sense.

@ is for when you want to mention a person's name so that they can find the message easier (if you wanted to mention Adam Savage, for example, then you would type @donttrythis)
# is for trending topics, so that you can click on the #text and find out other people that have used the same hashtag.
Trending topics are when a large number of people make comments with the same hashtag or phrase.

@ is used to refer to a Twitter user, and # is used to refer to a topic. These are both search able in the search bar found on the right side of the screen.

to tweet someone (send a message) you put an @ and then their name straight after it, so for example if you wanted to tweet justin bieber you'd write @justinbieber - that's his username.
a # is a hashtag which if people keep tweeting it, it will become a trending topic. for example if people wanted to trend 'hello' they'd write #hello in a lot of their tweets. the more people that tweet it, the quicker and easier it becomes a trending topic.
a @ is if you want to mention/reply/message someone in a tweet and a hashtag (#) is if you want to start a trending topic.
people might put an @ in the middle of their tweets because they want to mention someone.
if you're new to twitter or just simply don't understand it, then none of it will make sense to you - at all.
when you get used to it, everything makes sense and you understand it

@(Username) is a tweet sent to the person who owns the account except its shown to the public based on how you set your privacy .
#(Trending Topic) - the purpose of this is to tweet what is interesting and you can see what ppl share about it . At the MOMENT , #proudtobebritish is trending because of the ROYAL WEDDING of prince william and now princess kate .
