50mbps Verizon Fios internet download speed? - Jonathan C - 05-01-2013 10:20 PM

So today the verizon technician came to my house and installed FiOS into my household. I bought the 25/50 mbps plan and he told me i would be able to download at that speed when I was wired, and slightly slower wirelessly.

However, it seems that when I download files online and/or through Steam, I'm capped at 6-7mbps download speed. Is that normal? My connection is wired.

If you go here http://www.bandwidthplace.com/ and do a test you should see very close to your 50/25 speed while wired (as you said). Less if you are using 802/11 g when wireless.

If not, than you may want to contact the Fiber Solution Center to have them check your provisioning and internet settings. You can find the phone number on your TV in your menu or on the paper work they gave you with your installation.

Johnathan,

It sounds like you are getting your speeds if you mean 6-7 megaBYTES! I think the confusion here lies in bits vs bytes. Speed packages are often advertised as megabits. There's 8 megabits in 1 megabyte so a quick way to understand "real world" speed is to divide your connection speed by 8. In this case 50 divided by 8 is 6.25. If you're seeing 6-7MB, you're right where you should be!

You can verify this anytime by running a test at speedtest.verizon.com. If you see any issues, you can reach out to Verizon at http://www.facebook.com/VerizonFiOS.
