Why was there a High Severity Intrusion attempt on my laptop? - livelyfan698 - 05-01-2013 11:06 PM

I have had this laptop for 2 weeks, I haven't downloaded one thing onto it yet, just windows updates, and the only websites i have used have been Facebook, Youtube and a few big name Sports websites. Yet for some reason on Norton it says that I have been attacked and that it was blocked. How is it possible that I could already have a virus?

You don't have to download something in order to get a warning from Norton, it could be that someone was scanning or trying to intrude upon your laptop via - wifi - internet connection - bluetooth card or via some legitimate software or website.

Well, viruses happen at ANY TIME. You can get a virus the second you turn your computer on for the first time if you are unlucky.

The key here is that Norton blocked the attempted connection, so you did not get infected with a virus. Be careful on facebook, every now and then a few of those surveys can be infected with rootkits and other scumware.

For information purposes, find out the details of the "intrusion", but note the word "blocked." Norton stopped it. That's what it's supposed to do.

There's no way to prevent any of fifty million potential hackers from trying your IP address once in a while. A router, if it has its own firewall turned on, tends to prevent them from even getting to your machine and its firewall, but apparently this one did. (Keep both working. Two walls always offer more security than one.)

Don't panic. Hackers often set their machines to trying hundreds of sequential IP addresses looking for weaknesses. This is part of modern living.

Hope that helps.

That means there was a hacker trying to get to your info never trust any site
