Depends on what you are marketing...but some basic strategies are:
Comment on relevant blogs
Write articles (how-to, reviews, etc.) and post them to article sites and social bookmarking sites (digg, mixx, reddit, delicious, etc.)
Become active in a forum
Create a blog
