can you explain the concept to me. do you need lots of friends to use it, what do you talk about. any info would be appreciated.

it is basically just the status update part of facebook, you can talk about whatever you want and can have as many or as little friends on there as you like

Twitter is basically a way to spread news about your life, and what you're doing quickly and to a lot of people. Basically what happens is one person "tweets" a message or a status about what they're doing. Then, whoever "follows" their Twitter account will immediately see what they posted.
To be honest, it's more for celebrities and bands to notify their fans about what is going on with the status of the band, etc.

You can have as many or as few friends as you want, when you first start you'll obviously have few friends but as you use it more and promote yourself you'll gain more and more followers. You can have chats with friends and strangers alike. You can share fave websites or pictures or whatever. You can just share your thoughts on a particular subject (ie a TV show, a film, a sporting event, the news, etc...). You can also play games on the site. And you can role play if you want.
