someone said recently that they looked at all their old posts because something popped up on the side of their facebook. Two more people did that too... How do I do that? I don't see anything, am I missing it?

Probably some ad (depending what side). If you want to look at your old posts, click on Profile on the top right of the page, and scroll down as much as you want...

I think what you are referring to is a relatively new feature of Facebook. Whenever you are viewing a certain status post, every once in a while, a sidebar titled "Status Memories" will show up on the side with old status updates of the person whose status you are viewing. It's similar to the Photo Memories sidebar that shows up when you're looking through someone's albums.
