I am the stereotypical poor musician looking to make my own site to share my music. Please don't suggest youtube, myspace, facebook, or other social media sites. I would like to have a unique domain.

I would recommend going with smaller companies for hosting because they will offer you better customer service. I've had many problems with the big hosting companies like HostGator; they have so many customers, it is normal they can't please everyone.
