So to keep that in control...

Hello,
The reason for this is that some people make fake accounts. You providing your number does two important things:
1. To keep fake accounts from being made
2. It keeps your ID safe from being hacked and it it gets hacked facebook has more than one way to contact you.

it adds security to your account because it will text you if someone from an unreconized device is trying to get on you facebook account
