Why do conservatives think Canada, Australia, Europe, Japan, New Zealand etc. are socialist? - asdfqwer1234 - 05-27-2013 10:01 AM

When these countries/regions (I know Europe isn't a country, that's why I put /regions) are simply free market economies, like the US, but with social programs? Even if they have high taxes, universal health care, etc. this doesn't necessarily mean that the government has control over every aspect of life.

P.S. I'm not American, but I'm Canadian, and I'm fed up with cons and Republicans calling my country a socialist hellhole, and also the lies about Canadians going to the US for healthcare.

Cons don’t know what socialism is. Cons just repeat what their propagandists feed them.

I too am sick of the outright lies told about my country by certain American interests. I think the main reason is to do with just how skewed to the right America is as a whole. Even their Democrats are petty conservative and as for the Republicans... It's got to the point that nobody can do anything even slightly social without being accused of being outright Communists.

From that position everywhere else is way over to the left and it's hard to make out any distinction.

A lot of these countries have socialist aspects to them, but are not truly "socialist" countries. It's the same reason that, at least according to their critics, both Bush and Obama are "facists", "Nazis", etc. People don't really understand the words they throw around.

People tend to put radical labels on things when they hold positions slightly different from their own, to make them appear more different than they are.

You have stated that in socialism, the government has control of every aspect of your life. That is not the definition of socialism I know.
In socialism, the government to one degree or another assumes our personal responsibilities, such as you have with healthcare in Canada.
The government does nothing well, as with healthcare in Canada.

I don't think Japan is socialist, they are extremely right-wing actually. Europe is not free market at all, it is a form of socialism that is closer to fascism, if you take a real look at the Eurozone, it's economy relies on private banks that are merging with the state, and then they also adopt socialist policies. Just because a country says it is a free market, doesn't mean it is so.
