One advantage is to contact old friends that you have not seen in years and also stay in touch with people you see frequently. When I read the posts in Facebook, I get a really good feeling. I seem to find out a little more about a person.
I don't recommend you give out much personal information about yourself, as little as possible so you can protect your privacy from the wrong people.
