just click on chat option to see who is online

Its almost impossible to find that. you may check the news feed to find out any activity of that particular friend.

Is simple ...just go through the profile and check his recent activity..from their you can found out who is online even in chat off.

You Cant if There Offline There Offline you Can message That Person But thats About it If There not Online They Wont Show up In your Chat List

I have one idea and i always used it. If some one make their chat off . Message that person . If they are using facebook if they read your message, Facebook Show your chat box seen with time.
