what is needed to start a social media giant like my space/facebook etc... equipment, knowledge, etc?

equipment and software are easy to buy. what you need is critical mass of users. B/c what is the point of joining a social website if there is nobody on it? So you need to offer something that will get at least some people to switch over from Facebook.
And if I knew what that is, I would not be sharing it on the internet, I would be busy building a social website of my own.
