My Instagram at the moment is public. I was thinking about setting it to private, but I'm afraid all of my followers will have to re-follow me. Will it disable people not following me to see my photos, while allowing people following to still see?

no, the people who already follow you don't have to re follow. they already have access to your photos, so they can still see all of em.
