Consult with a financial advisor by going to your local bank and asking for listings. They will be able to better do research on companies and tell you which are smart in investing into.
ps. look into bonds, too, because although they make less money, they are less risky.

The best online "web" based community I know for investing is at http://www.fool.com (Motley Fool). Their investing game named "Caps" is fun and well can help people understand the basics of investing without risking capital.
They offer paid services that I do not partake of, but the free services can be entertaining and informational.
