I have never had immediate notifications (updates above the chat area) on facebook and would like to.
How do I go about getting it? I never got it when the update came out for some reason.

If you mean the ticker - it only shows up if there is enough activity on your account to make it useful for you. You need more friends or pages that post frequent updates.
It can also get hidden if the browser window is too narrow for it.
