I am finding it quite off-putting how many likes other people's posts get, and how few mine get. If I could just ignore the whole sorry business I think I'd feel better about myself.

Nope, there isn't any function that lets you do that unfortunately!
But "likes" aren't a measure of how popular or cool a person is, don't worry about them. Some people are like-whores who just post 'cool or funny things to get likes, and they like other posts so they might get some in return.
