Because if everyone makes an account for free and Facebook has to spend millions a dollars a week just to run the servers to make your time on facebook fluent and smooth, they need to gain money some how. Also alot of people need to get payed who work for facebook. Common sense, nothing in life is free.

Facebook needs Money in order to:
1. Make money for themselves;
2. Improve services to keep up with constant demands;
3. Improve the sites ability to fix problems;
4. Purchase more servers in order to support more users and improve reliability;
5. Keep investors happy.
There are multitudes of other reasons.

Facebook lets other people put their advertisements on their website. they pay facebook to display these ads. It is where they get much of their money.

facebook make money with the ads that get put there it costs money to maintain the servers to keep them on the power it costs to have them on to pay the staff and all same with TV
