You can DEACTIVATE the account and activate it later again by going to Settings>Account Settings>Security>Scroll down the list to the bottom and click on "Deactivate My Account">Fill out the short form and click "Confirm".

Or to PERMANENTLY DELETE your facebook account:

Be aware tho once you delete your account you cannot get it back..it's final.

First log in to your Facebook account.
Then directly go to the following URL.

https://www.facebook.com/help/delete_account

And Follow the Onscreen instruction. Once deleted your Facebook account can not be recovered in any way at any cost...(Be careful)

First delete all your friends and photos. I have heard your account is still there for several months after deletion.

To deactivate your account:
Click the account menu at the top right of any Facebook page
Select Account Settings
Click Security in the left-hand column
Click Deactivate your account
When you deactivate your account, your timeline and all information associated with it disappears from Facebook immediately. People on Facebook will not be able to search for you or view any of your information.
If you’d like to come back to Facebook anytime after you’ve deactivated your account, you can reactivate your account by logging in with your email and password. Your timeline will be restored in its entirety (friends, photos, interests, etc.). Remember that you will need to have access to the login email address for your account in order to reactivate it'

You can't it's there forever. I don't like Facebook. I have an account with them a longtime ago. I don't even remember my user name and password. I have not use it for years. Facebook sucks.
