I don't want my new profile picture to show up on news feed, so I only made my pictures visible to only me so that means people can't click them. Will this also remove them from the news feed.

yes it will never show on news feed but only You and You news Feed With Security Brackets

First, you can 'HIDE' it from your timeline
(this is what I do) If you made it visible for you, then it will never appear on news feed
It only appears on news feed when your picture is shared on 'public' or 'friends' or 'friends of friends' ..
