I would understand having like 400 or 500. But there's people on their who have like 1,500, even 2,000. I'm at 344. This is how I see it. You have probably 3 to 10 close friends, then you have another maybe 30 good friends; not close, but you speak frequently and are good enough to be friends. Then the rest are probably family, acquaintances and people you do know, but not that well. Some people add everyone or close to everyone they know. I would guess in some cases, adding people they never even met.

I have about 987 friends on my Facebook.
I travel and play music, I meet a lot of new people and make friends very frequent.
I talk to almost all of them and the ones I don't are just old friends I keep up with or family members.
My friend has 3k friends, the reason he does that is really to promote his music haha.

That's so simple may be half of them they might not be knowing like for example in my FB page I'm having only around 50 friends whom I know personally but in that 7 are there who have just added me because of same school or year of birth even after the fact that they might not be knowing me!!!

Only those people who have something to promote such as videos, pictures, songs or any other services add such a big number of friends.

If you are popular , known as social person.... contribute your views and info, knowledges in facebook... you may have so many friends...

There actually are REALLY POPULAR people. I'm in a huge high school with 5k+ students and I'm not that well known but I have friends nearing the upper limit of the range you mention. Those on the cheer or football team know everybody and even though they may not talk with all of them, it's just to flaunt their social status. I myself have added well over a hundred in the past year and that number may increase exponentially in the following years. That is but one of the reasons why people have so many fb friends but there are many more.

Because people think it makes them cool. Really? I mean honestly! Who can name over a thousand friends without looking them up?
