If I haven't actually visited the group page, but one of the posts pops up on my newsfeed, will it stay say I have seen it? This "seen by" feature really sucks and I don't want to respond to the group post, but if it says it's been seen by me, then I feel obligated to.

No, it wont say. If you have clicked on that post then it will say you have seen it
