My friend count went down by one, but there was no notification from FB about it. I'm not sure who it was.

It doesn't tell you so I guess you could look and see if you miss one...
There are apps in the App Store for smartphone that can see that stuff, search for Facebook friend

When someone unfriends you on FB, you are not notified of this by Facebook. The only way of finding out this is by looking through your friends list and see if you are missing any of your friends. It may help to keep a record of your current number of friends on Facebook. In this way, you will know if you have been unfriended if your friend count decreases.

No, FaceBook will not notify you if someone has unfriended you, if you feel like somebody has, go to their profile and see if there is an "add as friend" button, it you see that, that means they have unfriended you.
