I tend to use the 'like' button a lot, and I don't want everything that I 'like' to be displayed on my timeline, or notifications, or wherever it is being shown.

The likes and comments are not shown on your timeline. It is shown in the activity log. You just need to go to the activity log, then click on the 'x' sign which is placed along every details of like or comment you want to delete. the details about that like or comment will be deleted. Good luck!
