Do the police really monitor Facebook? - Greg - 08-18-2013 08:55 PM

I'm curious really, do the police actually spend a lot of time monitoring what people are talking about on Facebook or is an exaggeration? I'm not suggesting that I have anything to hide from the police but ive always wondered if they really do track you online although there are so many Facebook users that it cant really be possible to monitor everyone can it?

Anyone got any insight into this? Appreciate all responses, thanks.

Facebook is monitored to a certain extent... the police can and will get involved and things written can be used in evidence (For example with the 2011 London riots, people who stole things got caught on Facebook).

Not generally no. But it is widely believed (and no I don't mean a conspiracy theory) that when they investigate individuals they check their movements including their social networks for any kind of evidence or material that could be used as evidence later on. When I applied to become an officer in the UK they went through the process and told us that they would have to through Facebook and other personal things to determine what personalities we have and whether we literally fit the bill.

I hope I don't mysteriously disappear for telling people that... lol
