People are able to write a status sorta thing next to their name. How are they doing it?

Are you mentioning "alternative name"?
Try entering in that feild something and see if it works.
It's in the same section where you change your name.

I'm guessing that you are referring to something along the lines of a lightly shaded: hyphen followed by possibly an emoticon (ie: a bottle, happy face, bowl of rice) and something like: "feeling tired" or "feeling sexy". If so, then when you make a new status look for the small happy face emoticon on the bottom row next to the camera icon. If it is there then your account has been updated to accommodate that feature. If not then wait a while. Hope this helps.
