You might not be reaching a lot of your friends. You can always do a promoted post and see how many like it knowing your reach is increased dramatically.

I think it depends on what kind of status it is. If it is something somewhat important ("I passed all my classes this semester!!!!!") then I don't know.
As stated in another answer you could try to use facebook's "promote" option maybe that could help?
But If it's a pretty laid back post ("I had a really good day"), people, even well meaning ones might not feel the need to click like. So I wouldn't be irked about it.
Trust me I've been in both camps when it come to this.
