they are counting something... there are these weird things that kids do on facebook called "challenges" where they do something once a day that is on a preset list of things to post - these kids think of them as "facebook games"
yes, the # sign is normally used for hashtags, but hashtags dont work with numbers; hashtags have to start with an alpha character, not a numeric character
