If you visit friends on your profile page and if you see there name with no profile picture this means they have deactivated facebook. If you have neither this means you have been blocked and even when they unblock you you will both have to re add one another to be friends again

It does mean you cannot search for them, but they may have deleted theirs completely. I don't think they blocked you unless you dated and broke up or if they got upset with you.

Either they blocked you, or deactivated account. Ask your mutual friend if they are still on their friends list?
