Previous answer is correct. It started as The Facebook. It was a way for students at a university to connect and basically gossip about things. Eventually it spread to other universities and colleges and finally to the general public. If you want the whole story, watch Social Network. It covers everything from Facebook's inception to the lawsuit against Zuckerburg.
