Is there a way I can keep them from seeing my messages? I thought that was private, I guess not. This is freaking me out...

Well, yes. The new Timeline page automatically sets your privacy to the lowest settings every month or so. Click the little "Options" button (the gear), and set settings there.
...or so I've heard. I don't have the timeline.
