they advertise to you - just like radio and tv stations do
advertisers pay them money to show you their ads

SKYPE is free only for SKYPE-to-SKYPE calls.
If you want to call any landline or cell phone, you will have to open an account for payment in advance.

if you wanna hear the conspiracy its actually the government the govern tusks Facebook so they can see what we are saying and thinking . the answer for a sane person well they make money by the user the users go on Facebook the more people know about so all those companies like macy , sears , mc donalds pizza hut ect act they pay Facebook for commercials.

Skype is a huge spreading network.and yes skype earn maximum from advertisement. they pay skype for their advertisement.
And it is not right that skype allows us to make free call.
skype only allows us to make free call between skype to skype.
But it is right that skype can allows us to use free call all over world but it will be illegal..
because of that in this case the other sim card networks will be in a huge loss and they can claim against skype
Advertisement is not a small business ....now it has become no 1 business....a networking business
