I am trying to chat to my contacts and each time i click on any of them, the green dot that indicates online contacts disappears and they appear as offline but they ARE online.
What is this?
What should i do?

This happens all the time, don't worry about it. If they're talking to you, then you don't really need the dot.

This is happening to a lot of people, appearing online when offline etc., must be a glitch with facebook. Nothing to worry about you can still chat and ignore the green dot.
