I tried to but could not find a setting to do so

that's because there is no setting to prevent it
but there is a setting to make it so you have to approve it before anyone else can see it
then you just dont approve it - basically accomplishing the same thing

You could just delete your facebook account, and use your phone like normal people used to do.

you cant prevent them but you can
go to Notifications and choose to be notified that you have been tag
and remove it if you want
or you can
go to Timeline and Tagging
and choose who sees post you are tagged in and choose ONLY ME
clik the lock and choose more settings
