Or how do I know if they just left it alone without doing anything. Can someone please tell me all the possible scenarios that are possible. I mean there are more options this time than in the past years so I want to understand the mechanism.

If you go to the person (thay you've sent friend request) timeline and don't see "cancel friend request", that means they have not reject you yet. Or if you still see that you sent request to someone in your Activity Log ➤ Friends.
