When I recently tried to friend someone on facebook, when I clicked the add friend button, all it did was follow them. Why?

Sometimes if They Have to Many Friend Requests Being Sent to Them At Once and if they Have Not Answered Any Than it Wont Send it But it will Have you Follow them Tho Also If They are at the 5 thousand Limit the Same Thing Would Happen
