Is anyone familiar with exactly WHAT social media optimization is? - Lost - 10-13-2012 10:53 AM

I keep hearing about social media optimization and when I researched, there are so many answers and none are the same. Maybe it is an aggregation of all answers however, there are too many contradictions for that to be true.

Yes! Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a web marketing technique closely related to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) However, SMO utilizes already established, social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Gooruze, Veoh, Perspot, Hubpages etc, to establish high, organic search engine rankings.

The main focus, when utilizing these profiles on social media sites, it geo-targeting, but keyword, searchers who may be interested in your product or services (website traffic). Ultimately, SMO's focus is to displace competitors in search, using high trafficked, high PR sites. Here is a great video to explain more;

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is the methodization of social media activity with the intent of attracting unique visitors to website content. it's the process of utilizing social media marketing tactics and implementing optimization to gain increased awareness within the social networks and to gain traffic from sites other than the search engines. It involves creating accounts on social sites (such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.), designing custom backgrounds and writing posts.

A most bare bones and basic answer is this:

Social Media Otimization (SMO) means posting content (ie. your blog and forum posts, tweets, website content and articles) which is RELEVANT to your business and uses keywords (which are "common" words of your topic) so that when someone is searching "your topic" then your content shows up in the search results.

If you are knowledgeable about the topic, then your writing will be natural and the terms you use will be relevant and the search engines will find this and serve it up to people searching. That is what you want. That is the goal. Then if you have the content "linked" to your website or blog, this is what brings the vistors to you (called "driving traffic.)

I hope this helped. Good luck!
