you can erase private messages on your own account, but they will still appear in the other person's account...
it works like email... can you delete an email you send someone after you send it? no, you cannot

yes, it can be deleted on your end but you cannot delete it from their end. you go into the message there is a drop down menu on the upper right hand of the message, from there you can choose to delete specific parts of the conversation or the entire conversation.
