'trending' on twitter is basically what is being mentioned most in tweets at the moment and how fast they are being tweeted about. The trends for your area appear at the side of your homepage and the higher up the trend on that, the more talked about it is.
Trending helps a singer out because more people are able to find out whats happening, for example, some justin bieber fans trend '#mistletoefornumber1 which is basically them appealing for him to be number one in the music charts
