There is no right or wrong way to effectively market via social media. It can depend on what product / service your marketing, what customers your marketing to, and what message about your company your trying to send. Additionally different forms of social media (facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc...) offer different functions, capabilities, and opportunities.
It sounds a little daunting but very possible to do on your own. It all starts with a sense or a "savvyness" to what is going on. Probably the best blog dealing with social media is http://www.mashable.com
