In the post that says "that you have changed your pic", choose "hide from timeline" option. That will solve the problem.

Its easy mate to change our any kind of privacy on facebook, just change your profile photo and then click on top of right corner there's option of photo privacy like ( public, friends, or only me ) you click on it "only me" by this option only you can see your profile photo on your time-line not even your friends of public, hope work it.

in facebook or any other social websites your profile picture is public.so if u want to hide your pic from others means upload it and don't upload it in profile pic rather than album so u have an option at the top right corner of your pic you can change the setting first go to custom and type who are all wants to see your pic then click ok .good luck

Not possible. For that retain your old pic.
