Someone on my facebook chat is often talking to people online but she never has a green dot next to her name. It frequently says she was 'online 1min ago' though... what does this mean? Is it just the way she appears on whatever device she is using, or is she appearing offline but still chatting?

It can be either because she's offline but chatting, or because she's using the mobile version of Facebook. Either way, she's there and available.
