If you deactivate it temporarily, everything that is on there beforehand stays, but no one can comment/invite or send you a friend request during the deactivation, you will only be seen from your friends on fb and anyone on your friend list can still have the option to unfriend you.

Deactivation makes your profile unavailable to all facebook users including your friends. All events ,messages, comments, friends stay intact even when your profile is deactivated. People will not be able to search you.Suppose your friend has 10 friends including you, after you deactivate your account, you friend will see that he has 10 friends, but your profile will be invisible to them. You can login to your account anytime and use it like you have been doing before.
In case if you want to delete your entire data, then you can go for deleting your account. It will take 14 days to completely remove your account once the request has been given.
