Is there a way to change a setting so people cannot tell whether or not you are logged in?

As soon as you log in go to the chat bar click the 'options' gear and turn off chat. The settings should remain the same until you undo them. Also, you can choose who can or cannot see that you are online in 'Advanced Settings' from the same 'options' gear.

very simple turn of your chat.
in right side you will see a rounded circle type icon where your chat list is displaying.click that icon choose option as you want.
