I think as many as you want as long as you know them in real life, and you won't be reported by the one you added.

there is no number limit
the limit is based on whether you actually know them in real life or not
you arent allowed to add people you dont actually know - that's against the rules now, due to spam
your first violation will prevent you from sending requests for 7 days
your second violation will prevent you from sending requests for 14 days
your third violation will prevent you from sending requests for 30 days
if you continue to ignore the rules after that, they just delete your whole account

There is no limit on adding people, however, if you send tons of requests to random people and if they deny your request and mark you as "Not known in real life" you could get temporarily suspended from sending friend requests. Just be careful and add people you know at a normal rate. Use common sense.
