I have a lot of pending friend requests of people i don't know, if i do turn on the follower button will the automatically become my followers? or do they have to apply that for themselves?

Nah. When you turn on the follower button, a button that says "follow" will appear on your page. And people will click that.
Friends and followers are separate.
